This moment presents an opportunity for the President to solidify his legacy by prioritizing a transformed Northern Ghana as a cornerstone for achieving the even and balanced development of Ghana, as enshrined in Article 36 of the 1992 Constitution.
In his inaugural address, the President’s reaffirmation of his government’s commitment to resetting Ghana and building a nation of equal opportunities was both refreshing and inspiring. We applaud this vision and urge the administration to take decisive actions that align with these commitments.
As a Coalition dedicated to advancing the socio-economic transformation of Northern Ghana and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly those focused on poverty reduction, hunger eradication, and tackling inequalities—we are deeply concerned about the persistent challenges in these areas. These issues continue to threaten the well-being of the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized populations.
We call on the new administration to allocate greater resources and work diligently to address these challenges within the timelines of the SDGs, ensuring a meaningful and lasting impact across the country.
Revisiting the SADA Master Plan
The Coalition recognizes the President’s exemplary leadership during his previous administration, which saw the development of robust systems and a comprehensive blueprint for the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone, commonly referred to as the SADA Master Plan.
Although this vital plan was abandoned after the 2016 change of government, it remains relevant and actionable today. Revisiting and investing in its implementation could significantly eradicate poverty, hunger, and regional inequalities. Notably, several policy proposals outlined in the 2024 NDC Manifesto—such as women empowerment, industrialization, renewable energy, and climate-resilient irrigation infrastructure (e.g., the Pwalugu and Tono Phase II dams)—align seamlessly with the SADA Master Plan’s objectives.
These initiatives have the potential to modernize agriculture, boost productivity, ensure food security, create jobs, and enhance livelihoods in Northern Ghana.
Unlocking Northern Ghana’s Potential
With 8 million hectares of arable land, Northern Ghana has the capacity not only to serve as the nation’s food basket, feeding over 50 million people, but also to significantly increase its contribution to Ghana’s GDP. Currently contributing $10.1 billion annually, this region holds the promise of much greater economic impact if bolstered by substantial public investment and safeguarded against corruption and mismanagement.
Call for Collaboration
We urge President Mahama to foster regular engagements with CSOs, particularly those operating in Northern Ghana, to promote effective policy dialogue, prioritization, and implementation. Such partnerships are vital for transforming lives and building the Ghana we all envision.
